Addressing a large audience of students, parents and teachers, the sports psychologist spoke modestly about being the first Irish woman to row across the Atlantic Ocean. Her other adventures include circumnavigating Ireland in a canoe, cycling 6,000km across Canada and trekking Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. • Liam Roche gives a thumbs-up to the community of Cree who rallied to the cause in supporting the Easter Bunny 5k Fun Run & Walk in aid of Crumlin and Temple Street Hospitals.

Liam, who has just turned 16, suffered a debilitating spinal stroke last September. According to his mum, Diane, this is a very rare condition that affects one in three million people. As a result of his condition, Liam spent 25 weeks in Temple Street Children’s University Hospital before being transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire one month ago.

Due to Liam’s very positive experience, organisers of the Easter Bunny 5k decided to include Temple Street in their fundraising endeavour this year. Diane Roche hopes that the tremendous community effort in Cree will contribute towards a MOTOmed movement therapy machine that can be used at home by Liam as part of his rehab treatment to build strength in his legs.

Formed in 1990 following a suggestion by Fr Pat Mulcahy, Shannon Apostolic Society has held its last exhibition of work and is closing after 33 years of service during which time its members have crafted sacred vessels and vestments for use on the missions.
According to Mai Farrell, the society’s members have embroidered and created vestments and sell various items to raise funds for missionary priests.
It’s a sad time for Mai and the other loyal members, as she says herself, “Nobody will take over from me so this is our last exhibition”.
