• Early Start To The Silage Season....Contractor Walter Moroney making silage bales, with a Mc Hale Fusion baler, on the farm of Fintan Moloney at Silvergrove, O Callaghan's Mills on Tuesday 22nd March. The cut was of Red Clover variety which is high in feed value, protein and minerals and while it is only suitable for silage making and not for grazing, it can be harvested up to four times a year. The crop, which yields approximately twenty five bales per acre per year, gets no artificial fertiliser but has slurry spread on it after each cut to drive it. Photograph by John Kelly.

 • Maud Conroy from Tulla and Mciahel Donovan from Carrick-on-Suir celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary after 60 years together. It was love at first sight when they met at the Garryowen Irish Club in Hammersmith 61 years previously . They had both been working in London since the early 1930s and went out together for 12 months before walking down the aisle of Strawberry Hill Church in Twickenham on September 5, 1938. They initially made their home in London but moved back to Ireland at the outbreak of the Second World War, settling in Tulla where they raised six children. Now in their early 80s, they have 29 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren - October 2, 1998. Photograph by John Kelly

 • Eric Shaw and Liam Barry of Clarecastle Mens Shed with a replica 19c punt and one of the surviving punt guns used on the Fergus estuary.

According to Eric Shaw, two large punt guns were acquired in Clarecastle in the 1890s. The punts traversed the Fergus estuary shooting flocks of geese and duck. A extremely large variety of shotgun, the punt gun was used in the 19th and early 20th centuries to shoot large numbers of waterfowl for commercial harvesting operations. According to Eric, the two guns were used in the area for a number of years before their owners moved away, leaving the guns behind them. The guns were passed on to Clarecastle Heritage Group and recently the Clarecastle Mens Shed built a replica punt boat to demonstrate how these huge firearms were used.
