First year students in St. John Bosco community college in Kildysart have shown their awareness of the growing problem of animal cruelty by fundraising over Ä300 this month for the ISPCA. As part of their CSPE course the group studied animal cruelty and teacher Imelda Burke organised a visit to the school by Frank Coote, a worker with the ISPCA in Ennis. Assisted by an abandoned puppy on his way to a new home, Mr. Coote gave a talk on the abuse and mistreatment of both domestic and farm animals and the work he does with the society. That morning alone he had put down thirty-six stray dogs not claimed within the 7-day period. Spurred on by this visit and newspaper articles they had looked at while studying violence towards animals, the students held a cake sale and organised a raffle in January and February to raise funds for the charity.....The presentation of the Ä300 cheque was made to the ISPCA on Wednesday last and our picture shows from left; Cathal Garry with "Spike", Eoin Breen, Frankie Coote, ISPCA dog Warden, Karen Ryan and Shona Cleary with "Abbey" Photograph by John Kelly...
